How Public Sector Legal Teams Are Embracing Digital Transformation
At Iken, we’ve been accredited by Investors in People (IiP) since 2005 and proudly held IiP Gold since 2012. Over the years, our organisation has weathered big changes: not just in how we work, but in what the legal and public sector needs from us. Through all that, one thing has remained constant: we’ve built our progress around people and purpose.
In the early years, IiP gave us the structure we needed to embed values into the growing business. A practical framework helped us reflect on where we were, where we wanted to be, and what was missing. It was also a chance to practice what we preach. We used our own Iken software to standardise internal processes, track progress, and pull together evidence using e-bundling and workflows.
When London was announced as the 2012 Olympic host, our then CEO Elizabeth Miles gave us a stretch target of our own: we’d aim for Gold. That meant moving beyond structure and policies, it meant uncovering who we were as a team and what we stood for.
With support from Graham Massey and The House, we surfaced the values that still shape Iken today:
These values aren’t just words on a wall, they’re embedded into how we recruit, develop, and celebrate our people. From our onboarding to our annual Iken Employee Awards, they shape the culture we’re proud of.
“One of the best aspects of working here at Iken is the culture we’ve built based on our values: brave, inquisitive, tenacious and warm-hearted.”

Resilience in a Changing Sector
Like many organisations, the early 2020s brought significant challenge and change. We downsized our team, restructured our office space, and transformed the business to prepare for a new era of legal technology. Amid all that, our culture held firm, not by accident, but by design.
We see every IiP assessment as a moment to learn, not just to certify. Our 2025 reaccreditation followed a difficult few years. It was a bittersweet time: we had reason to celebrate, births, marriages, new hires, and deep reason to reflect, following the loss of our co-founder Dr Andrew Chester and our colleague Ian Preston, both of whom had helped shape our technology and our standards from the beginning.
So, it was with genuine emotion that we received our 47-page feedback report and discovered we’d improved on every single indicator since 2022.
2025 IiP Survey Results
We’re proud of our progress, but we know there’s still more to do. Feedback included suggestions like:
“We could celebrate success a little more.”
“More learning opportunities would be nice – perhaps leadership courses for non-managers.”
“As we often work remotely, it would be good to have more connection and collaboration.”
Iken Team Members
One important challenge for us now is empowering our team to call out when behaviours don’t align with our values and ensuring our culture supports that. We’re also rethinking our employee review process, aiming for something more engaging and less “heavy going.”
Learning and Sharing
Whether you’re at the start of your IiP journey or just thinking about what values-led transformation might mean for your team, we’d love to share what’s worked for us and learn from what’s worked for you.
Please feel free to connect with me or my colleague Chantelle Hazell if you’d like to continue the conversation.
Final Thoughts
Legal transformation isn’t just about technology, it’s about the people behind it. Our journey with IiP is a reflection of how values, purpose, and progress go hand in hand. The more resilient we are on the inside, the more we can support the organisations and communities we serve.
